Parents know best – not the government. Social media reforms should guarantee parental consent and give parents the tools they need to ensure healthy social media habits.
However, the Florida House of Representatives just passed House Bill 1, which does nothing to empower parents. Rather than ensuring parents have the tools they need, House Bill 1 ignores parental consent and imposes a social media ban in Florida for anyone under sixteen years old – even if their parents approve.
While Florida lawmakers may have good intentions to protect our teens, this bill is an extreme government overreach that puts the government in control of parenting.
The bill’s supporters have said this is ‘common-sense’ legislation. But there is nothing common sense about ignoring parental consent.
Taking power from parents and giving it to the government is not the answer! Nothing ensures healthy social media habits more than parental involvement.
Florida legislators must #FixHB1 to empower parents!
